For a first visit to Attenborough Nature Reserve, use the Nature Centre on Barton Lane as your arrival point. The reserve lies off the A6005 between Beeston and Long Eaton. Reserve operator Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust publishes separate hours for reserve access, the car park and the centre, so plan your return around the facilities you’ll need.[2]

Getting to the Nature Centre

For drivers, the centre’s address is Barton Lane, Chilwell, Nottinghamshire, NG9 6DY. Turn off the A6005 at Chilwell Retail Park and follow Barton Lane past the Village Hotel and over the railway crossing. The car park is at the bottom of the lane.[2]

Arriving by train means allowing for the walk beyond the reserve entrance. The Trust puts Attenborough station about five minutes’ walk from the reserve, with a further ten minutes to the Nature Centre. If you’re meeting someone at the café, include both parts when deciding which train to catch.[2]

The Trust identifies Chilwell Retail Park / West Point Shopping Centre as the bus stop for visitors using the Indigo service. From there, its directions describe an approximately 500-metre walk down Barton Lane. Check the bus operator’s current timetable for your journey rather than building your plans around an assumed frequency.[2]

You can also approach on foot or by bicycle using the riverside paths and Trent Valley Greenways. Cycling is permitted on the riverside paths, but permission does not extend to every reserve path. Check the permitted route before continuing beyond your arrival point.[2]

Reserve, Car Park and Café Hours

The visitor page lists reserve access from 8am to 8pm, while the car park opens at 8am and closes at dusk. For a visit by car, work backwards from the dusk gate closure when deciding how far to walk. The published reserve access window extends beyond the car park’s closing time when dusk falls earlier.[2]

Centre hours change with the clocks. During the summer period, Monday to Friday opening is 9am to 5pm, with the café closing at 4.30pm. At weekends, the centre opens from 9am to 6pm and the café closes at 5.30pm. During the winter period, both are listed as open daily from 9am to 4pm. The centre closes on Christmas Day.[2]

Parking is free for Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust members, staff and registered volunteers based at Attenborough. Membership of another local Wildlife Trust does not bring the same exemption. Blue Badge holders pay the published charges unless they qualify through one of the stated exemptions.[2]

You can pay by card at the machines or online through Park With Ease up to 48 hours after your visit. If you intend to pay afterwards, set a reminder before leaving.[2]

Checking Access for Your Particular Visit

The Trust lists Attenborough as wheelchair accessible and welcomes assistance dogs in the centre. For a visit that depends on a particular path or crossing, ask about that route specifically. Give your starting point, destination and any requirements concerning surfaces or gradients so the centre can advise on the journey you actually want to make.[2]

Works Bridge needs particular attention. The Trust’s October 2026 replacement notice announced installation work and the intended restoration of bridleway access. It described that restoration prospectively. If your proposed walk uses the crossing, confirm whether the bridge and its approach are available before committing to the route.[1]

Dogs, Groups and a Useful Call Ahead

The centre welcomes well-behaved owners and their dogs, with consideration requested for visitors who are less confident around dogs. If you’re bringing a group of approximately 15 people or more, contact the centre in advance. Its café is small, and notice helps staff plan food availability and staffing.[2]

For route access questions or a group visit, call Attenborough Nature Centre on 0115 972 1777. Before setting off, check the Trust’s visitor page for opening and parking information and its reserve page for access notices.[1][2]
